Coastal Environment 2008
Seventh International Conference on Environmental Problems in Coastal Regions including Oil and Chemical Spill Studies
Event Date: 5/19/2008 - 5/21/2008 (mm/dd/yy)

The Coastal Environment Conference deals with problems related to monitoring, analysis and modelling of coastal regions, including sea, land and air phenomena. An important part of the meeting is the discussion of ecological and environmental problems and the issues of water quality. Coastal zones are particularly affected by problems related to population growth and industrial and tourism activities. These developments tend to generate ecological, social and economic pressures which bring different parts into conflict. Effective strategies for management of coastal areas should therefore consider them as dynamic and integrated systems in order to control their environmental quality. One of the most serious problems affecting coastal areas is the damage resulting from oil and chemical spills. Numerous and frequent spills demonstrate the extent of the damage inflicted on the environment when a large volume of oil is released and in particular, the susceptibility of the coastal region ecology to these spills. The Conference also addresses topics related to soil and land spills. The Meeting will comprise studies of modelling and the fate of oil and chemical slicks as well as the development of spill contingency plans and issues relative to prevention and clean-up measures. This series of conferences started in Rio in 1996 and continued in Cancun (1998); Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (2000); Rhodes (2002); Alicante (2004) with the last of the meetings held in Rhodes in 2006.

Waste Management 2008
Fourth International Conference on Waste Management and the Environment
Event Date: 6/2/2008 - 6/4/2008 (mm/dd/yy)

The International Conference on Waste Management and the Environment will be reconvened in 2008 following the success of the conferences held in Cádiz in 2002, Rhodes in 2004 and Malta 2006. The Meeting will address the need for the exchange of scientific information among experts in this rapidly growing area of research and applications. Waste Management is becoming one of the key problems of the modern world, an international issue that is intensified by the volume and complexity of waste discarded by society’s domestic and industrial waste. Unfortunately, many of the practices adopted in the past were aimed at short-term solutions without sufficient regard or knowledge for long term implications on health, the environment or sustainability and this, in many cases, is leading to the need to take difficult and expensive remedial action. With our growing awareness of the detrimental environmental effects of current waste disposal, there is a significant onus of accountability for effective waste management. Better practice and safer solutions are required. Not only is there a need for more research on current disposal methods such as landfill, incineration, chemical and effluent treatment, but also on recycling, waste minimization, clean technologies, waste monitoring, public and corporate awareness, and general education.

Sustainable Irrigation 2008
Second International Conference on Sustainable Irrigation Management, Technologies and Policies
Event Date: 6/11/2008 - 6/13/2008 (mm/dd/yy)

Sustainable Irrigation 2008 is the second conference in the new series, following the success of the first meeting organised in 2006 in Bologna. As the standard of living or a large section of the world population continues to increase, the strategic importance of fresh water resources also rises. It is essential to seek ways of achieving the most efficient and equitable use of these resources at the same time as making their use sustainable. Even in those countries where fresh water is currently easily available, over-exploitation is leading to damaging long lasting environmental effects, such as lowering of water tables or depletion of river flows. Adding to these effects, the problem of contamination effectively reduces the availability of sufficiently clean water. Water is essential for irrigation purposes, but its indiscriminate use can lead not only to shortages, but also to the deterioration of crop yields and soils. It is hence vital to ensure that it is applied as effectively as possible in order to reach sustainability. This Conference seeks to address the different aspects of irrigation, including not only the management of water resources and scientific and technical aspects, but also matters related to policy and economics. The Conference aims to attract researchers in academia and industry as well as professional practitioners and policy makers to review the state of the art from the scientific, technological, political and economic points of view. Its objective is also to discuss how to reach the sustainable management of irrigation resources in the future by applying modern computer simulation methods, advanced technologies and new technologies as well as analysing different policies and economic forecasting techniques.

Altlasten 2008 (Contaminated Sites 2008)
Due Dilligence in Land and Real Estate Evaluation—The Risks of Lingering Contamination and Pollution in Construction and Remediation
Event Date: 6/11/2008 - 6/12/2008 (mm/dd/yy)

This event, orgnaized by the Groundwater Task Force, centers on environmental protection and construction, with speakers contributing thoughts on engineering, remediation, the economic implications of pollution, and much more. A trip to a current site undergoing remediation is part of the event. A discount is available for government agencies and universities. The conference is in German. Its description from the original German press release: Das 9. Baustellenbesichtigung).

Debris Flow 2008

Event Date: 6/18/2008 - 6/20/2008 (mm/dd/yy)

Second International Conference on Debris Flow including all aspects of Debris Flow Monitoring, Modelling, Hazard Assesment, Mitigation Measures, Case Studies, and Extreme Events, Erosion, Slope Instability and Sediment Transport. Debris and hyper-concentrated flows are among the most frequent and destructive of all water relater processes. They mainly affect mountain areas in a wide range of morpho-climatic environments and in recent years have attracted more and more attention from the scientific and professional communities and concern from the public awareness, due to the increasing frequency with which they occur and the death toll they claim. Higher population pressure on natural resources in hazard-prone areas and development of activities that have the potential to increase the magnitude of hazard call for improvements in the criteria used to identify debris flow risk areas and to design suitable prevention and mitigation measures. The Conference will provide a forum for engineers, scientists and managers from laboratories, industries, governments and academia to interchange knowledge and expertise in the fields of erosion and slope instability, sediment transport, debris flow and debris flood data acquisition, debris flow phenomenology and laboratory tests, using the most advanced, state-of-the-art methodologies in monitoring, modelling, mechanics, hazard prediction and risk assessment.

Landslides, Slope Stability and the Safety of Infrastructures
The 5th International Conference
Event Date: 7/24/2008 - 7/26/2008 (mm/dd/yy)

Landslides are a serious geologic hazard common most countries of the world. The severity of the landslide problem worsens with increased urban development and change in land use. Particular area requiring attention concerns the selection and design of appropriate, cost-effective remedial measures, which in turn require a clear understanding of the conditions and processes that caused the landslide. A wealth of experience has been accumulated in recent years in understanding, recognition and treatment of landslide hazards but our knowledge is still fragmentary. Given this understanding it is not surprising that landslides are rapidly becoming the focus of major scientific research, engineering study and practices, and land-use policy throughout the world. Thus, it is a time to look forward and to reflect on the past. The 5th International Conference on Landslides, Slope Stability & the Safety of Infrastructures will provoke a reflection of our past and initiate visions of the future. Case histories are an important part of the journey on which we have traveled. They will be particularly encouraged. Our progress into the future will depend partly on innovation. Therefore, research orientated papers will be solicited. Potential topics for contributions are: Advancement in Slope Design and Construction (taking into accounts of various effects such as rainfall, groundwater, seismicity, climate change etc) including Preventive and Remedial Solutions for Landslides; Site Investigations, Field and Laboratory Testing, Instrumentation and Monitoring; Slope Stability Analyses (in both soil and rock slopes); Slope Assessment and Management, Guidelines for Hill Slope Development, Slope Maintenance, Early Warning and Real Time Monitoring Systems; Loss Assessments; Emergency Preparedness, Response and Recovery; Information Collection, Interpretation, Dissemination and Archiving, and Public Awareness; Case Histories of Slope Failures/ Landslide (including slope instability of landfills and waste materials, coastal areas, urban areas, slope instability in special materials such as residual soils, shales, loess, soft sensitive clays, etc).
